LCOY Canada 2024
The transition to a sustainable, eco-friendly Canadian future is not as easy as turning off the oil pumps and opening windfarms. To revert the damages of the past, Canadian youth must cooperate and work together to achieve sustainable development.
Local Conference of Youth (LCOY) Canada 2024 is a United Nations event hosted by the University of British Columbia (UBC) Faculty of Forestry and Human and Nature Youth Club. It is a conference for youth ages 15-35 and will be held on Friday, August 2nd, 2024 at The University of British Columbia. The online and in-person conference will involve keynote speeches, workshops, presentations, and panel discussions surrounding the themes of building sustainable communities, thriving biodiversity, extreme weather events, and climate justice. By attending the conference you will be able to voice the future you want to live in and it will be shared directly with the United Nations. We are inviting you to come to LCOY Canada to listen, learn, and have a voice in your future.
The conference follows a framework provided by YOUNGO, the officially youth constituency of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

Richard Li
Co-Chair
Richard Li is a Grade 10 student of St. George’s School in Vancouver. He is serving as the Co-Chair of Local Conference of Youth Canada (LCOY) 2024. In 2023, he participated as a speaker for youth-led politics at LCOY and received the best oral presentation award. In working with LCOY, he was selected to participate in Canada’s working paper to be presented at COY18 (Conference of Youth 18) and COP28 (Conference of Parties 28). Being involved with like-minded and passionate youth inspired Richard to take action. He founded his own climate-focused non-profit and applied to co-chair LCOY 2024. He hopes to bring another successful rendition of climate discussions to Canada. Outside of his passion for environmental policy, Richard enjoys singing opera, writing poetry, and organizing similar conferences.
LCOY 2024 provides a safe platform for youth across Canada to voice the sustainable future they envision!
Xilai Donald Zhu

Xilai Zhu, a high school student from Vancouver, BC, is deeply committed to combating climate change. He has long championed environmental sustainability through innovative activities and community engagement, inspiring his classmates to take tangible actions toward a greener future. Xilai hopes that his dedication and leadership serve as a beacon of hope and motivation, and encourages his peers to join him in making a positive impact on the environment.

Jacky Tang
Director
Jacky Tang, a student at St. George’s School, is passionate about finding tangible and innovative ways to combat the effects of climate change. He has participated in the CTY Global Environment summer program and uses art to raise awareness of the impact of climate change. Seeing the detrimental effects of climate change on natural ecosystems, countries, and individuals sparked Jacky’s efforts to understand how humans can significantly alter the environment. He strongly believes that climate change is the most significant problem in the world, and he is deeply interested in how countries can maintain a strong economy while instilling policies to solve the current climate crisis. Other than his passion for understanding the environment, he loves competing in various golf tournaments, making 3D art designs, and following the stock market every day. Jacky hopes to create another successful LCOY, helping the world take another step towards a greener future.

I'm Edward Liu, a Grade 12 student at Lord Byng Secondary School. I'm passionate about addressing climate change and committed to promoting sustainability. Our generation has the power to make a significant impact, and I'm dedicated to taking action and raising awareness to protect our planet for the future.
